In Memoriam: Walter Just

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Mr. Walter Just, founder and Trodat Group supervisory board member, on Nov. 14, 2012 in Wels, Austria.

Mr. Just was born in Vienna on July 24, 1921. He was not only a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather for three generations of his own family, but he embodied Trodat and was a leader to all employees of the Trodat group of companies all over the world.

Under Mr. Just's guidance, Trodat grew from a small business to its present state - a company with over 30 subsidiaries, distributed in 15 countries, with more than 1,000 employees. Now, Trodat is the world's largest stamp manufacturer and Trotec Laser is the technology leader for laser marking, cutting, and engraving systems.

In 1976, the Austrian president awarded Walter Just the professional title of Kommerzialrat, an honorary doctorate awarded to persons of merit in Austria. After handing over the management of Trodat in 1984, Mr. Just had more time to devote to cultural things. He is the spiritual father of the Signs of Life Museum in Wels as well as the founder and patron of the Wagner Festival in Wels. In addition, he was able to strengthen its activities in the Rotary Club and, in 1990, was awarded the designation of "Paul Harris Fellow" of Rotary International. In June 2012, he received the silver medal of the province of Upper Austria.

Mr. Just was a great asset to the Trodat and Trotec organizations both as a leader and a friend he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies goes out to his family during this time of mourning.

Design an Acrylic Lamp with Your Laser!

Acrylic Lamp, cut with a laser

Looking for a unique housewarming, birthday, or Christmas gift... or maybe just to add some character to your own decor? This is an easy project that is sure to turn some heads, as the construction of the acrylic lamp provides a marvelous light reflection!

Required material:

  • 3 mm acrylic
    • We used Evonik's "Radiant" plexiglas
  • Suitable Machine: Speedy 100, Speedy 300, Speedy 400, Speedy 500
    • We used a Speedy 300 60W with a 2" lens

Step 1 - Laser cut the acrylic lamp

Open the template file for this extraordinary piece of furniture (for download click here) and send it to the laser.

Select your favorite color and start cutting the acrylic.

The laser parameters may vary, as they depend on the machine used and the available laser power.

Recommended cutting parameters:

  • Blue: power: 100 %, speed 0.7 %, frequency 9000 Hz, Air Assist on
  • Red: power: 60 %, speed 1.0 %, frequency 9000 Hz, Air Assist on, z-offset 3 mm
To fit in the socket of the light bulb, emboss the edge with cutting lines. This is an alternative to engraving the area. Thanks to the de-focussing, the laser beam is wider and the cutting lines overlap. That's how the "engraving effect" can be done with cutting lines.

Step 2 - Assemble the Acrylic Lamp

Assembling the acrylic lamp is easy. The assembling instruction helps.
