Project 365 Gets a Trotec!

When the Trotec team heard about Campbell and his foundation Project 365 we knew we had to get involved!
Campbell is 12 years old and has spent the last 3 years creating beautiful toys and gifts for unwell children, adults, and people that need a smile. Campbell's bears have gone far and wide across the world.

Campbell's goal was to have a laser cutter machine to help produce insert joints that keep his bears arms and legs moving. He currently hand cuts, files, and sands these parts, so a laser cutter will make this process so much easier on him!

Trotec matched donations made to his GoFundMe page dollar for dollar to ensure Campbell could get a Speedy 360 and help many more people throughout the world.
Reece from our Australia office arrived with the Speedy 360 to show Campbell and the P365 family how to use the laser. After using it, Campbell discovered the laser would save him 4 hours a week and he can't wait to start making all sorts of gifts like puzzles!
We cannot wait to see where this laser will take year 4 of this great organization.

Trotec Customers Share Their Stories

We recently asked Trotec customers to tell us how they use their laser, and how it has changed their work. We were thrilled to receive several responses that gave us interesting insight on what makes our customers creative, savvy, and successful. Here is what a few of them had to say.

Gordon Washington - Grumpe's Specialties

Our Trotec laser is a life saver to our business! We make hard candy lollipops for the promotional products industry. Our main niche is our capability for printing up to three lines of text on the lollipop stick. We also direct pad-and-print customers artwork and logos using edible white paste directly onto the candy head itself. In order for us to create our unique candy, we must first burn one of the worst materials necessary which is thick red 7mm, A4 box style rubber sheets.

Our original laser took nearly three hours per run to cut down to the correct thickness needed. Our new Trotec laser can cut a full run in less than one hour and cuts a neater and cleaner line. We really enjoy how easy it is to work within CorelDraw and JobControl to set up our Trotec laser jobs. During our busy promotional months, our laser has to burn and burn to keep up with our candy production. It is a solid money saver and great investment for our line of work. I would be a "sucker" to not use a "sweet" Trotec laser!

Greg Smith - Davenport Schools

I have had my Trotec Speedy 100 for almost two years and I absolutely love it. I have been amazed at the things I have been able to engrave and cut.

As a teacher, I use the laser as a way to teach a different side of manufacturing. Students have created some pretty awesome items. With my help, I worked with a group of students to create a mock-up in cardboard of a desktop organizer. Another set of students created faceplates cut out of ¼” maple for a sound amplifier for an electronic device. A student created a rubber stamp for the State Fair.

The school’s robotics teams use the laser to create armor and various parts out of plastic. They have also made numerous pieces of swap that are handed out at various events including the FIRST World Championships.

Another idea that came to me and a group of my students was a better way to make business cards. Students were preparing for a robotics contest and needed double sided business cards, time and money was not on their side. They had access to a color laser printer and a rundown paper cutter. A student happened to bring me a set of business cards that had been printed and cut, I was unhappy about that the cards were not uniform. I knew from cutting cardboard, I thought card stock should be no problem. We set up a test and concluded that card stock would cut nicely and we decided to give it a go. After several test runs and testing out the template we made, we figured out that it would take just a few seconds to cut out each business card and with that, we cut out several hundred.

Becoming a laser etching professional was an unexpected turn in my life journey. I was a project manager most of my adult life, and I never had any idea that I would be doing this. After experiencing an accident that left me unable to continue in my chosen profession, I was faced to make some significant changes. One of my hobbies of several decades was drawing in pen and ink. Black and white images were perfect for laser etching. I began the research, and brushed up on my computer skills (including learning Corel Draw). Soon I started my search for a machine.

Trotec offered everything I needed, and I jumped in purchasing my first laser, a Rayjet. I focused on my design and drawing skills, eventually increasing my capacity to buy another machine that was larger and faster. Today I have a eclectic office in Downtown Grand Rapids, Mich. I'm proud to say that I finished last fall a large piece that honored our fallen soldiers from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. An acrylic American flag measuring 20 feet long and rising 12 feet from the ground. Every panel carrying an outline of dog tags representing the 6,851 U.S. military that have given their lives. The memorial piece currently rests at the American Legion Post “Boat and Canoe Club” in the North East part of Grand Rapids, Mich. The piece is illuminated from dusk to dawn and the stars that make up the flag reflect their shadow onto the backdrop.

Major Stephen Hall - Stephen Hall Enterprises

I have the original Trotec 25watt Laser engraver, I believe it's #15. I bought it new.... I still use it now. The only thing that I had to replace on it was the lens, which I cracked when I got too close to the work. I'm a Army veteran and I use my machine to do name tags for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Combat Infantrymens Association and the VietNam Vets of America. I also make acrylic and wood awards for those organizations. I'm also one of the original members of the Awards & Recognition Association.

Construct A Truck USA Debuts at Detroit Maker Faire

Jim Bustamante, founder of Construct A Truck USA and Trotec laser user, debuted his Construct A Truck USA Mobile Assembly Line trailer at the Detroit Maker Faire, July 26-27 in Dearborn, MI.

The workshop was cleverly designed in a modified Air Stream trailer which was retro-fitted with shelving and a truck assembly line, allowing for the ideal working area for children (and children at heart) to assemble laser cut automobiles at parties and festivals.

Maker Faire Preparations
"We had about 100 trucks ready to be assembled in our trailer for the Maker Faire," said Jim. "Our Trotec laser was instrumental in making sure that we were prepared. We were running it over 10 hours a day, 6 days a week the month before the show."  Jim knew that the kid-friendly audience of makers at the maker Faire was the perfect place to introduce his concept.  Not only did he use the laser to create the parts of the trucks, but he also created various fixtures and fittings for his trailer on it as well.

TechShop Beginnings
Jim came up with his idea for this after creating truck wine bottle holders at the local TechShop.  "It was a big hit with the kids. All the adults thought it was really cute, but the kids couldn't stop playing with it. So I threw the bottle away and started making more trucks."  After assessing his production needs, he knew that he would need a laser in his shop full time.  "I chose Trotec because of the industrial grade quality of the machine and the CeramiCore laser source."  Congratulations Jim and crew on a successful grand opening!

Kickstarting Your Laser Series: Etchpop's Kickstart to Success!

Crowdfunding your ideas and projects is becoming more popular with the rise of sites  such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo.  This series of posts will feature campaigns that have used Trotec lasers in some incredibly successful projects.

Chester Lindgrin and Marshal Tipton wanted to modernize the process of woodblock printing, so they came up with an idea to create custom woodblocks with customer’s artwork with a laser. “We took wood blocks and used the laser to engrave the blocks to do the printing.  We set up a business where you can go to the website and upload your design.  We then engrave the wood block and send it back to you for you to print with.  This bypassed the hand carving step and used modern technology to do this type of printing.” says Chester.

In 2012, they started their Kickstarter campaign to help fund their laser and startup. “The Trotec engraves waaaay faster than everyone else’s.  I had heard about them and am a tool snob, and knew that they were on the higher end.  I went to an NBM show and saw the engraving speeds of the Trotec laser and I was sold.”

Their Kickstarter campaign was successful, more than doubling their original goal.  This also allowed them to create MC LaserLabs. “Our whole plan was to become a laser shop, but used the Kickstarter as a jumping off point.”

Kickstarting Your Laser Series: Crowd-Fund Your Dreams

The realm of crowd-funding your dreams is on the rise with the popularity of website such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Entrepreneurs can create fundraising campaigns to bring to fruition any type of service or product with a short web video and an idea.

This series of posts will feature campaigns that have used Trotec lasers in some incredibly successful projects.

Setting up a crowd-funding campaign is a lot of work. Not only do you have a come up with an idea that the general public will love enough to pledge money to, a person needs to make sure that the campaign website has a clear message and a video detailing the project.

But all the work will pay off! Trotec has several established customers who funded their laser through Kickstarter... Many of which made more than enough money to cover their initial start-up costs.

One of Trotec's customers stated “By combining the speed and precision of a Trotec laser with my custom software to process the designs and a special rig built specifically to help quickly rotate entire batches of dice at the same time, I believe we can significantly reduce the amount of time needed to create these custom dice. Less time spent in the manufacturing process means we can bring these dice into a price range that makes sense.”
