Appliqué is an excellent method of decorating apparel.
It is most commonly used for decorating sporting apparel; such as jersey’s, sweatshirts, and hats with names, numbers, and team logos.
Laser’s offer unique benefits over traditional methods of producing appliqué such as knife or die cutting. With a laser system you can achieve better accuracy, finished quality, and detail! You also get sealed edges (no fraying), no fabric distortion, and no tool wear. The laser is a flexible tool that gives you a "cutting edge" advantage over traditional methods!
LET'S TRY IT!
1: First you will need to create your graphic. For your first attempt we suggest choosing something simple such as a letter or number. We are going to produce a two color appliqué, so we will need two cut lines. Choose two colors you use for cutting on your laser.
2: Choose two colors of poly-twill with a PSA backing. Leave protective backing on the bottom color and remove protective backing from top color. Place top color onto bottom color making sure to smooth out any air bubbles. Now the material is ready for laser processing. Using a piece of scrap twill run a small test to determine two settings; one color to kiss cut and the other color to cut through both layers.
3: Position your twill in your laser system and focus (tip- we suggest using a 1.5” focus lens). Send your graphic to your laser. Make sure to set the proper material settings for each color as you determined in the previous step.
Step 4: Remove from laser and weed as desired to expose bottom layer and voila appliqué is now complete and ready to apply!
We would love for you to share a picture of your finished product with us and fellow Trotec Laser fans! Please post a comment on this blog post or on our Facebook Page of your work of art.
Happy Appliqueing!
